There are many forms of detoxes out there these days! It is extremely important that we clean out our systems regularly. I heard a bit of advice that we should clean out our bodies at least 4 times a year, with the change in seasons is a great way to remember to do this. For me, January is a great month! We have allowed ourselves some treats and extra goodies of there holidays and were not as active as we were in the fall.
If you think of it, our liver is our filter. Like on your dryer at home, if you don’t clean out the lint filter, it won’t work. Think of your liver not being intentionally cleaned out for 30 years? 40? 70? We need to give our bodies the best chance it has to function properly. Your colon is 5 feet of “tubing” where food, toxins, pesticides, bacteria can hide out.
While watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary, we learn about the juice cleanse. This is great for the committed ones of you out there! They encourage a 10 day juice fast. The first 3 days, your body still has food in the intestines. By day 5, you are cleaning out the food in your liver. Isn’t it amazing that our body holds on to food that long? So, the fast doesn’t really start until day 5-6. Then, you have another 4 days to really re-boot your system. It’s a commitment and a process. You will see quite a difference in how you feel.
There are also colon cleanses, coffee enemas, master cleanses and other forms of cleanses. But I have found those to be difficult for me as a mom, time-wise, to do successfully! Please realize and research by reading the blog we wrote about Feeling Worse Before Better.. you will feel awful for a couple days with any cleanse, but this is normal! Don’t give up! Push through it!
Personally, we love Shaklee products. They have one product in particular that I rave about constantly. Herb-lax! It’s a blend of 9 herbs created by Dr. Shaklee 50 years ago. The herbs work together to cleanse your body naturally, and gently. Those who are faithful in using Herb-lax for internal cleanliness will get surprising good side effects as days, weeks and months go by. These include a better complexion, no headaches, no bad breath, little odor during bowel movements, plus more energy and clearer thinking.
For a good short-term detox, take a weekend or an equivalent 3-4 days and take:
2-3 Herb-Lax and
2-3 Shaklee Liver DTX
Three or four times a day.
But then continue to take 2-4 Herb-Lax and 2-4 Liver DTX daily for at least one or two months to give body the opportunity to pull out toxins stored in the fatty tissue and in the lymphatic system and in the liver that isn’t going to come out in just a short term cleanse. We take about 4-6 Herb-lax every night before bed. This seems to help keep us “cleaned out”!
You should drink plenty of water during this time. It’s recommended we drink half our body weight in ounces of water. So, if you’re a female weighing 140lbs, you should drink at least 70 ounces of water per day, or more during this detox time. The faster you get the bad stuff out of your body, the better you’ll feel!!
You will also need to keep your immune system functioning well during this cleansing time. An important nutrient is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is like a vacuum cleaner in the blood, going around vacuuming up accumulated and very damaging oxidizing agents that are just waste by-products of past metabolic events. We love Vitamin C for the hundreds of cures it assists with, from the common cold to cancer. It’s just amazing!
Another great herb for detoxification and we have found to be incredible is Alfalfa. Like I’ve said in previous blogs, it has replaced my Advil and Motrin. I was taking 10-12 Advils a day.. extremely harmful for my liver and overall health. But I was in pain, and felt I needed it. When I learned about Alfalfa, I was so happy. I feel that it’s responsible for clearing up my acne, for bringing down the inflammation in my joints, and keeping me “cleaned” out of harmful toxins.
Alfalfa is rich in chlorophyll, the natural detoxifying and deodorizing agent that makes plant leaves green. Anyone with bad breath, bad body odor, or bad foot odor would benefit greatly by taking plenty of Shaklee Alfalfa Complex. With all the toxic chemicals in deoderants and perfumes, isn’t it wise to deodorize from the inside out?
Last tip, is to spend time in quiet reflection and meditation. Allow your body to release the stress that holds on to mental and spiritual strongholds. Our bodies are made up of Body/Soul/Spirit. If we only cleanse our bodies, and our souls are full of toxins, we haven’t truly cleansed.
If you’ll consider cleansing 4 times a year, you will find your quality of life will change dramatically. Take good care of the one machine you’ve been given for this whole lifetime. Keep it clean and clear!!
To your health!!

Would you recommend doing the Liver DTX + Herb Lax alone or in addition to a juice cleanse? Would a juice cleanse work well by itself?
hey sarah! i would do one or the other.. or the way we’re doing it right now is a smaller portion of Herb Lax and Juicing. Like today.. I took 6 Herb Lax last night, water/Carrot Juice/water/Green Juice.. so far. Then, we’ll make a healthy dinner and have more Herb Lax. This just keeps us cleaned out as a lifestyle…If you do a complete juice fast, I think 2-4 Herb Lax at night would be helpful. Just depends on how you feel.
So, the cleanse still works even if you eat regular (but health) food during it?
We use Herb Lax daily and more often when we feel like we’ve had too much. I think a “real” cleanse is more strict, but for me, I feel an on-going cleansing is the most healthy. We need to have an intentional time each year a number of times to really deep clean (eww), but a constantly cleaning out with Herb Lax is so good for you!
Gotcha. Thanks for answering my questions. I really want to do a juice cleanse with Luke…I have never done one before and I think it would be a really good kickstart to the new year and eating healthy again after December…This website (and your Pinterest recipes) are such a great resource for me. Thanks for making the information you have learned available!
you’re sweet. i know you can do it! another great thing to do is the Daniel Fast. I have lots of recipes for that here too. It’s only eating things that come from the ground or tree for 21 days. I’m happy to share info, I know I’m not an expert or have conquered all these things, but we’re all on this journey!!
